Accommodation in the Esk Valley
The River Esk flows for nearly 30 miles, from its source in Westerdale to the North Sea at Whitby. As it meanders through the North York Moors National Park is passes through a series of picturesque villages. The Esk Valley has become a popular destination for those looking for peace and quiet.
The Granary Cottages are located just a stone's through from the Esk Valley and Whitby. We're perfectly situated for those wanting to explore the Esk Valley, North York Moors and the Yorkshire coast.
Sleights and Ruswarp are the closest of the Esk Valley villages. Both boast excellent local butchers, cosy pubs serving meals and railway stations providing access to the North York Moors Steam Railway. Ruswarp is also home to Ruswarp Pleasure Boats, offering rowing boats and kayaks to those who want to travel on the River Esk itself. Rowing boats suitable for up to 6 people and individual kayaks can be hired by the hour. This is a wonderful way to experience the River Esk - drinking in the peace and quiet and enjoying the beauty and serenity.
The Esk Valley Railway
Heading away from Whitby the village of Grosmont is well worth a visit. It's home to the North York Moors Steam Railway. Here a team of volunteer engineers maintain the fleet of steam and diesel engines. These trains run throughout the year, between Whitby and Pickering. This is another wonderful way to experience some of the Esk Valley villages from a unique perspective. The steam railway seperates from the Whitby to Middlesbrough line at Grosmont, passing through Goathland and heading off across the moors. If you'd rather follow the River Esk then take a trip on the Whitby to Middlesbrough railway. The engines and carriages are a little less romantic, but the views are equally stunning. Why not take the train a few villages inland, then follow the Esk Valley walk back towards Whitby?
The Esk Valley area was made famous through the filming of the long-running ITV series 'Heartbeat'. This was primarily filmed in the village of Goathland, which later featured in one of the Harry Potter movies! For the cyclists, no visit to the Esk Valley is complete without a trip to Yorkshire Cycle Hub in Fryup. Tucked away towards the northern end of the Esk Valley this is a bike shop with a wonderful cafe. And even if you're not into cycling the excellent food & drink mean it's still well worth a visit!
Esk Valley Wildlife, Food & Drink
Villages such as Egton, Egton Bridge, Lealholm, Castleton, Danby all have excellent pubs serving great food. Danby is also home to the Moors Centre - a great place to learn about the North York Moors National Park.
The Esk Valley is also home to some wonderful wildlife. Deer can often be seen roaming in the field. All kinds of bird life including owls, birds of prey, woodpeckers and more can be spotted. Foxes, badgers and hedgehogs all make their homes here.
